Tanker Creative founder, Nicola Devine’s Co-Chair Term Extended at DEPOT

Nicola here—enough of the third-person weirdness already—I’m delighted to share some good news from the intersection of strategy, creativity, and industry sustainability.

Some of you may know that I have volunteered on the Board of Trustees at DEPOT Artspace—based in Te Hau Kapua, Devonport, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland—for the last six years, most recently as Co-Chair. As the new year rolls around, I’m pleased to announce I‘ll be continuing in this role with the support of the Board, as the organisation builds on a strong strategic foundation.

Serving on the board was, and continues to, feel like a natural extension of Tanker’s own kaupapa: supporting artists and creative organisations to thrive creatively and also as part of a wholistic creative professional practice.

Shared Values, Shared Momentum

The synergy between Tanker and DEPOT is grounded in a belief that creativity flourishes when it is supported by clear strategy, accessible and inclusive design and community engagement.

DEPOT’s work spans an extraordinary range of creative spheres—from providing studio space and curating exhibitions, to connecting creatives with work opportunities, encouraging high-school level song writing, delivering fundraising initiatives, hosting events, and investing deeply in upskilling through workshops and mentoring. It’s an ecosystem that supports the community from primary and high school students, through to emerging practitioners and established fine artists—and even includes the talented creatives working within DEPOT itself.

It is always such a joy to see the outcomes of this mahi across the creative community, and to contribute at a governance level.

A Major Milestone: DEPOT’s Website Redevelopment

One of the most significant projects I’ve been closely involved in over the past year has been the first section of a multi-stage upgrade of DEPOT’s website, delivered alongside an amazing group of specialist collaborators and DEPOT’s in-house team.

The redevelopment was strongly informed by DEPOT’s strategic direction and goals; focusing on:
• Expanding and clarifying the site mapping to support multiple audiences and services within DEPOT
• Developing considered wireframes to educate and deliver access to the wide variety of content
• Expanding the brand palette for online clarity, accessibility, and longevity
• Improving the overall digital experience for artists, supporters, and visitors

A particularly exciting outcome was the introduction of eCommerce synchronised with Lightspeed Point-of-Sale at Toi Toa at 3 Vic, including the launch of DEPOT Gift and Ceramic Workshop Vouchers, now very popular offerings and important new income streams.

An Organisation Encouraging and Sharing

DEPOT’s programme continues to reflect the richness and diversity of its expanded community. Events and exhibitions bring together local Devonport residents, architecture students from multiple universities across the motu, jewellers, musicians, visual artists, and creative practitioners across disciplines and career stages.

Highlights include kaupapa-driven events such as Matariki 2025—Ruarua Whetū, as well as an unforgettable SOLD OUT musical evening featuring local opera star Olivia Forbes; and another with exhibiting sculptor/musician Gary Hunt. From emerging voices to established fine artists, DEPOT continues to create space for support, connection, allyship and opportunity.

Looking Ahead: 30 Years of DEPOT

Looking to the future, 2026 marks the 30th anniversary of DEPOT, a significant milestone celebrating three decades of championing creativity, community, and professional artistic practice in Aotearoa.

My term as Co-Chair continues to centre on stewardship, collaboration, and long-term thinking—helping ensure DEPOT remains a place where creatives are supported not only to make work, but to build resilient, sustainable creative lives.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who is part of this incredible organisation from the artists, trustees, staff, volunteers, supporters, collaborators, and community. I looks forward to continuing the journey together.
